If your emergency is outside our hours, call your nearest 24/7 hospital A&E. Sustained bleeding, swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, or trauma to the face needs immediate hospital care.
These are dental situations where waiting makes things worse. Call ahead so we can prepare and reduce your wait time.
Severe toothache
Sharp, throbbing or constant pain — especially if it wakes you up at night or doesn't respond to over-the-counter painkillers. Often signals a nerve infection or deep decay that needs treatment, not just analgesia.
Broken or chipped tooth
A fractured tooth exposes the inner layer to bacteria and air, causing pain and faster decay. Same-day repair (composite bonding, temporary crown) protects the tooth until a definitive restoration is planned.
Knocked-out tooth (avulsion)
Time-critical. Keep the tooth in milk or saliva (not water), don't scrub the root, and come in within 30 minutes if possible. Re-implantation is most successful in the first hour.
Swelling of face, gum or jaw
Facial swelling or a tender lump on the gum usually means an abscess — a localised infection that needs drainage and antibiotics. Don't wait it out; abscesses can spread.
Lost crown, filling or bridge
An exposed tooth with no protective covering is sensitive and at risk of further damage. We can refit, rebond or replace the same day in most cases.
Bleeding that won't stop
Persistent bleeding from a tooth, gum or recent extraction site that doesn't respond to gentle gauze pressure for 20 minutes. Call us — we'll see you immediately.
Trauma after a fall or accident
Cuts to lips or cheek, loose teeth after a knock, or jaw pain after a fall. We assess and stabilise; if there's a suspected fracture beyond the teeth, we refer urgently.
Cosmetic concerns, routine checkups, mild sensitivity that comes and goes, and planned treatments are better booked as a normal consultation. Same-day slots are kept for situations that genuinely can't wait.
Phone is fastest during clinic hours. WhatsApp is fine for non-urgent triage and to send a photo of the affected area. If we can't answer immediately, we will return your call within minutes.

We will tell you honestly whether you need to come in now, can wait until morning, or should go to A&E. Better to ask than to wait.
