Most people come to veneers with two questions: what will this cost, and will it last. The honest answers are “it depends” and “not forever” — and you deserve to hear why before you sit in a chair. This guide walks through what veneers are, the difference between composite and porcelain, realistic prices, and the questions we hear most in Ajman.
What veneers actually are
A veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front of a tooth to change its colour, shape, or alignment. It covers the visible surface; it does not replace the tooth or treat decay underneath. The American Dental Association (ADA) describes veneers as a cosmetic option for chipped, stained, gapped, or slightly crowded teeth — not a fix for cavities or gum disease. If there’s an underlying problem, that gets treated first. Veneers go on healthy teeth.
Composite vs porcelain
There are two main routes, and they suit different people. Composite is a tooth-coloured resin shaped onto the tooth in one visit, often with little or no enamel removed. Porcelain is a custom ceramic shell made in a lab and bonded on later, usually after some enamel is reshaped. Neither is “better” in the abstract — it depends on your teeth, your budget, and how much change you want.
- Composite: lower cost, usually fewer visits, easier to repair, and more reversible when minimal enamel is touched — but it stains sooner and tends to last fewer years.
- Porcelain: higher cost, more lab time, resists staining well, and tends to last longer — but placing it usually means reshaping enamel, which makes it far less reversible.
Are veneers permanent?
This is the part many people get wrong, so we’ll say it plainly: veneers are not permanent in the sense of lasting forever. Two things matter here. First, placing most veneers — especially porcelain — involves reshaping a layer of enamel, and enamel does not grow back. That step is irreversible even if the veneer itself comes off. Second, the veneer is a restoration, and like any restoration it wears, can chip, and eventually needs replacing. Minimal-prep options remove less enamel, but “less” is not “none.” Going in with that understanding is the whole point.
I tell every patient the same thing — a veneer is a restoration, not a forever fix. Once we reshape enamel it doesn’t come back, and the veneer itself will need replacing down the line. If someone promises you a smile that lasts forever, ask more questions.
Do veneers hurt, and how long do they last
Preparation is usually done under local anaesthetic, so the appointment itself is typically comfortable. Some people notice mild sensitivity to hot and cold for a few days after, which usually settles. Comfort varies from person to person, so we won’t pretend everyone’s experience is identical. On longevity, expect ranges rather than guarantees: composite veneers often last around 4 to 8 years, and porcelain often lasts roughly 10 to 15 years, sometimes longer. Those are general figures, not a promise for your mouth — how long yours last depends on your bite, your habits, and how well they’re cared for. Grinding, biting nails, or chewing ice will shorten the life of either type.
What veneers cost in the UAE
Here are typical market ranges in the UAE as of 2026 — not a Madeel price, and not a quote. Composite veneers commonly run around AED 800 to 1,500 per tooth. Porcelain veneers commonly run around AED 1,500 to 3,000 per tooth, and premium ceramic work can sit higher. A full smile multiplies that by the number of teeth treated. The only way to know your figure is an in-person assessment, because the price moves with several things below. - Are veneers halal? We can only speak to the dentistry: minimal-prep veneers remove little or no enamel and can be more reversible, while conventional porcelain reshapes enamel and is largely irreversible. Whether veneers are religiously permissible is a question for a qualified scholar, not a dental clinic — we’d encourage you to ask one.
- Can I get veneers if I have a filling or a crowded tooth? Sometimes, but it depends. We assess the health of the tooth and your bite first, and we’ll tell you honestly if another treatment fits better.
- Will they look obviously fake? Not when they’re planned to suit your face and matched in shade — but results vary from person to person, so we plan shape and colour with you before anything is bonded.
